On Monday, February 8, Senator Spilka presented awards to members of the Elder Community Care Collaborative Program at the Massachusetts Coalition for Suicide Prevention Event at the State House.
Statewide “Embrace Your Future” Campaign Launches in Natick
Senator Spilka’s office joined Governor Deval Patrick, Secretary of Elder Affairs Ann L. Hartstein, and Undersecretary of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation Barbara Anthony today at the launch of Massachusetts’ “Embrace Your Future” long-term care awareness campaign at the Morse Institute Library in Natick.
“As a strong advocate for seniors and persons with disabilities, I applaud Governor Patrick and Secretary Hartstein for pulling together this comprehensive guide of long-term care options,” stated Senator Spilka. “It will be of immense benefit to seniors who are anticipating long-term care needs and persons with disabilities in the MetroWest and throughout the state. This forward-thinking approach will help residents budget for secure, healthy and productive futures.”
MWDN: Hopkinton charity nets needed donation

HOPKINTON – Looking to provide backpacks and school supplies to returning students a couple of months ago, Cherylann Lambert Walsh and her Project Just Because charity scored a coup: a $100,000 donation from Wal-Mart’s foundation.
Yesterday, company representatives, charity staff and local legislators gathered to mark the gift, tour the organization’s new South Street site and look ahead to the holidays and the continued demand for services during the downturn.
Milford Daily News: Bill could change Children in Need of Services law

An area lawmaker is proposing a major change in the way Massachusetts treats truants, runaways and other at-risk youth, shifting its focus from court orders to community-based early intervention and treatment.
Sen. Karen Spilka, D-Ashland, testified in support of her bill yesterday, saying a revamp of the state’s Children in Need of Services law is needed. The law is often a last resort for children and families who have exhausted all other intervention options.
