FRANKLIN — To honor her 15th year as president, Dean College will be holding a celebration to highlight the accomplishments of Dr. Paula Rooney tomorrow afternoon.

State Rep. James Vallee, Sen. Karen Spilka and Town Administrator Jeff Nutting will join trustees, students, staff, and alumni to speak of Rooney’s dedication and determination as president.

“It is my pleasure and honor to attend (the celebration). I think she has done a terrific job,” said Spilka, D-Ashland.

“I think she’s been a great asset for (Dean). She certainly transformed (it) at a very difficult time when she took over as president,” said Vallee, a Democrat from Franklin. “It was a very challenging environment for the junior college market, and she certainly reinvigorated (Dean) and made a lot of changes. She put it in a great place.”

“I’ve been here almost 13 years … when I first came to campus, there were so many things that needed to be done,” said Geraldine Johnson, public relations specialist for the college. “Now, wherever I walk, I see all these wonderful changes.”

Some of Rooney’s more recent contributions include building a new residence hall, construction of state-of-the-art classrooms, an interior renovation to the library commons, and the addition of a new performing arts and dining center, which are scheduled to open in July, Johnson said.
