Senator Spilka Hosts a Jobs Creation Comission Public Hearing

On Wednesday, March 30th, the Jobs Creation Commission, chaired by Senator Karen Spilka and Representative Joseph Wagner, held a public hearing to brief its members on the major components of the workforce development system.

“It was a great hearing” said Senator Spilka.  “I think this commission has a real opportunity to not only help create new jobs but find policies that will make that job creation sustainable. “

Testimony included a presentation on the health of the Massachusetts economy by commission member Dr. Alan Clayton Matthews, an economist from Northeastern University.  Commissioner of the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Charles Carr and Undersecretary of Workforce Development  Jennifer James Price, both members of the Jobs Creation Commission, gave an overview of the workforce development programs throughout various state agencies and quasi-publics. Sylvia Beville, the Executive Director of the Metro South/ West Employment Board, and Dan Gillis, the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Workforce Board Association, presented on workforce investment boards, regional initiatives, one-stop career centers and local programs available to job seekers and employers.  The Commission also heard from members of the public who wished to participate.
