BOSTON – On behalf of the taxpayer community – businesses and individuals – the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce would like to thank Senator Karen Spilka for helping to lead the effort to secure important tax reforms as part of the FY 2012 state budget bill.

These tax reforms, which Sen. Spilka sponsored and helped champion in the Legislature, are designed to strengthen the state’s business climate and enhance fairness and predictability for taxpayers. They include three key provisions: speeding up tax audits, affording taxpayers the same period of time to file for an abatement as the state has to file an assessment, and giving taxpayers earlier notification of changes to tax policy being considered by the state.

Thanks to the efforts of Sen. Spilka, her colleagues in the Legislature, and Governor Patrick’s Administration, these proposals are now a reality. They will help bolster Massachusetts’ reputation as an attractive place to do business while preserving valuable taxpayer resources. They also helpt o build on the important economic development package that state leaders, including Sen. Spilka signed into law last summer.

We appreciate Sen. Spilka’s leadership and look forward to a continuing collaboration on issues of job creation, economic development, and competitiveness for Massachusetts.

PAUL GUZZI,

President and CEO

Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce
