Spilka Announces Community Policing Grant for Framingham

Yesterday, Senator Karen Spilka (D-Ashland) announced that the Town of Framingham has been selected to receive a grant from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security aimed at helping municipalities fund policing activities, programs, purchases, or construction.

“I am pleased to hear that the Framingham Police Department has been selected for this funding,” said Senator Spilka. “This grant will not only put another individual back to work, it will also help strengthen the department and support the dedicated work they do to ensure public safety in the community.”

“This comprehensive effort is designed to engage law enforcement agencies, municipalities, and community-based organizations to work together to reduce violence in our neighborhoods,” said Secretary of Public Safety and Security Mary Beth Heffernan.

Framingham has been awarded $89,889 through the Community Policing Grant Program as part of the Fiscal Year 2012 Budget. The funds will be used to hire one officer for the department and will fully fund the officer’s salary, equipment, and will also help offset the town’s costs for health care benefits.

“Like towns across the Commonwealth, we have experienced deep cuts and our six positions at our police department have gone unfunded,” said Framingham Police Chief Steven B. Carl. “We are so grateful for the work the state has done to grant us this funding and we are looking forward to beginning the application process and getting an officer out on the streets.”

The Executive Office of Public Safety and Security will be sending an official letter to the Framingham Department and once it is received and all parties have signed, the hiring process may commence.
