Statement on Bristol County House of Corrections

A Statement from Senate President Karen E. Spilka and 
Senator John F. Keenan, Chair of the Senate Committee on Post Audit and Oversight

“The Massachusetts State Senate is extremely concerned about a recent situation at the Bristol County House of Corrections involving federal detainees. On Friday, May 1, 2020, there was an incident in which the safety of both staff and detainees was endangered. In response, a member of the state Senate, acting within the Senator's statutory authority as a legislator, attempted to visit the facility and was denied entry. The Senate Committee on Post Audit and Oversight is investigating the events that transpired on Friday, as well as the denial of access to the Senator.”
