The following joint statement from Senate President Spilka and House Speaker Mariano on the extension of paid emergency COVID leave was sent to media.

“A healthy Commonwealth is key to emerging from this pandemic stronger than before. With COVID-19 still among us, having the ability to take personal time to recover if infected or to care for a loved one recovering from the virus is not available to everyone. Neither is taking time off to receive the lifesaving vaccine or booster or assist a loved one, including a child, in getting vaccinated. The Senate and House believe that no one should have to choose between their personal health and a paycheck. To ensure all workers continue to have the opportunity to take time from their jobs and care for themselves and their families, today the Legislature extended paid emergency COVID leave through April 1, 2022. The evidence is clear: The vaccine is the best and safest way to stem the spread of the virus and end the pandemic. Extending this vital benefit will help Massachusetts continue its progress towards full recovery.”
