STATEMENT: Senate President Karen Spilka responds to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address
Tonight, Massachusetts residents watched the President of the United States use the power of his office to lie, attack his opponents, and chip away at the democratic institutions that actually make this country great.
The words he offered tonight were nothing more than clickbait. They were distractions that do nothing for families in Massachusetts who are struggling to afford housing, groceries, and childcare because of his reckless economic policies and self-inflicted tariff chaos. They do nothing for women and transgender people fighting for their bodily autonomy. They do nothing for immigrant families living in fear of ICE. And they do nothing for people terrified of our nation entering yet another armed conflict.
Massachusetts residents are not fooled.
While the President uses his office to stoke hatred, the Massachusetts Senate will stay focused on the problems people actually care about. We will fight to bring down costs. We will fight to build more housing. And we will do everything in our power to protect our residents from the destruction and chaos that this Administration is threatening families and communities with.
Massachusetts has never waited for Washington to lead. We will not stop fighting because this administration is failing. We will defend our values. We will protect our people. And we will not back down.
