Senate President Spilka's Remarks with Governor Healey, Detailing Nation-Leading Plan to Protect Against President Trump's ACA Cost Hikes
On January 8, 2025, Senate President Spilka joined Governor Maura Healey to detail new nation-leading action to protect Massachusetts residents from health care cost increases after President Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans refused to extend Federal Enhanced Premium Tax Credits (EPTC) under the Affordable Care Act.
More than 22 million Americans, including hundreds of thousands of Massachusetts residents who get their health insurance through the Massachusetts Health Connector, have relied on these credits to afford their health insurance.
Senate President Spilka’s remarks, as prepared for delivery, are below.
Thank you Governor Healey and thank you to all of the speakers who are joining us today.
I am proud to stand here today and represent the Massachusetts State Senate with Governor Healey, members of her administration, and our colleagues in the House of Representatives to say with one voice: we are standing on the side of Massachusetts’ residents, and we are standing on the side of health care affordability.
It is clear the Trump Administration is more concerned with starting illegal wars, enriching their billionaire cronies and pursuing power for its own sake than addressing the very real kitchen table issues that we all face.
Especially the rising cost of healthcare.
Massachusetts has been a leader in expanding access to healthcare for all residents for decades because everyone standing up here believes that the role of government is to help make life more manageable and more affordable for our residents.
The Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans may have forgotten that THEY WORK FOR US, but we in Massachusetts have continued to maintain our commitment to our residents.
While we will never be able to make up for every cut and irresponsible action from the federal government, we promise to continue to do what we can to protect our residents and defend our values.
I’m proud of the partnership that this announcement represents – and I’m proud to say that: Massachusetts, we have your back.
Thank you.
